It had been some days since I had started working in a government department and was busy in my work when an old man had come up to me and said that he had lost the claim for his house and needed a copy of the claim to present it in court. Without looking up I had said to the old man that this would take 50 rupees and after saying this when I had looked up that old man had gone. The next day this old man came up to me and pushed a 50 rupee note into my hand and said that now would my work be done. When I had looked up, I was shocked to see tears falling from the old man’s eyes. I asked that man what was wrong but the man didn’t say anything but then when I forced the man to tell the source of his dilemma he said that yesterday he had to sell his daughters earrings that he had made for her wedding which he had bought on instalments in order to bring this 50 rupee. This truly shocked me and I was unable to say anything further. Quietly I had gotten up and gave the copy of the claim to the old man and pushed that 50 rupee note into the old man’s pocket. After that man had left I realized the extent of my crime and decided to never take any bribe. I could feel that the old man’s bony arms had helped saved me from falling into hell since it’s the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ saying that “he gives bribes and he who accepts bribes are both inhabitants of hell”.
